What is Traffic Wales?
Traffic Wales is the Welsh Assembly Government's traffic management and information service. It gathers and disseminates real-time traffic information relating to incidents currently taking place on Welsh roads. It displays messages on Variable Message Signs giving advance warning of incidents, problems or conditions on the motorways and trunk roads.
Who operates Traffic Wales?
Traffic Wales is the Welsh Assembly Government's traffic management and information service. It is funded by the Welsh Assembly Government and managed by engineering consultants, Atkins.
Which roads does Traffic Wales cover?
Traffic Wales covers the M4, M48, A48, A48M, A470, A494, A4042, A4232, A449, A465, A55 and A550.
What determines how the messages are displayed on the Traffic Wales Variable Message Signs?
Road and weather conditions, accidents, congestion and major events are the main factors determining the messages we display. We also display general motoring advice such as 'Fasten your seatbelt' and 'Don't drink and drive'. The clock is also displayed to help with your travelling. These are also bilingual where possible.
Do Variable Message Signs house speed cameras?
No.
Does Traffic Wales help me if I'm stranded or my vehicle breaks down?
Yes. We're the voice at the other end of the emergency 'phones on the motorways and trunk roads. Our operators will contact your family or friends or the motoring organisation to come and help you. Failing that, they'll contact the police to arrange local recovery.
What is Traffic Wales' relationship with the police?
We have regular contact with the police and act as their main source of information about accidents, incidents or other problems on the roads. Police patrol teams also use the South Wales Traffic Management Centre in Coryton.
Why does Traffic Wales only cover the main roads?
Traffic monitoring equipment required to generate information has only been installed on the motorways and trunk roads. Vehicle numbers don't easily justify its installation elsewhere, but the service is being extended constantly. In those areas not covered, we maintain close contact with the local police forces to ensure we have the latest information.
Does Traffic Wales provide the travel bulletins on the radio?
The radio traffic and travel bulletins are provided by an organisation called Trafficlink. They are based within our control room at the South Wales Traffic Management Centre and have access to immediate real-time information from our cameras.
Do you provide information to the police that could incriminate me?
We provide camera images to the police when requested in accordance with statutory obligations. However, we exist to help and inform the traveller.
